TRANSLATION
Whether written or spoken, you want to use the correct word, paying attention to the culture of the target audience and how your words will be perceived.
The world will perhaps never forget when in 2010, BP Chairman Carl Henric Svanberg referred to the residents of Louisiana as “ the small people”.
Residents of Louisiana, still reeling from Hurricane Katrina did not respond well to his choice of words. Svanberg on the other hand had simply translated from Swedish to English, and he meant to say " the man on the street".
BP was keen to stress that English was not Svanberg´s first language and the true meaning of his choice of words had been lost in the translation.
